DT1325 - SUSTAINABILITY IN DESIGN
Substitute for Lauren Lacey on Friday - July 22, 2016 (Week 6)

The course is following the syllabus. Some students are behind but the class is moving forward to Module 4. We missed
our video introduction last week, so I've included those below. Students should know what LEED is but these
videos will help in advancing their understanding of the system and how it works. I've included videos on sustainable
design, water efficiency, and material selection to cover this module's objectives.
Building Materials
This video covers a broad range of building materials
The next three videos are part of a 3-part series.
LEED
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)
is a third-party certification program. It is a nationally
accepted organization for design, operation and construction
of high-performance green buildings.
The following videos about LEED are a MUST SEE
LEED (on Water Efficiency)
Module 4: Resources Used in Sustainable Construction
Readings for Weeks 6 and 7 (Module 4) <----Reading Notes Added by David Young
Keeler, M., & Burke, B. Chapters 13, 14, 15, and 16.
Neither ProQuest Science Journals nor the following article are available on the Virtual Library (David Young)

building design. Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, 220(3), 271-288.
Here is more information about the Course Project for your reference. <----Note Added by David Young
Course Learning Objectives Covered
Analyze and apply materials and resources in the design of a green building.
Analyze and apply water efficiency in sustainable design.
Explain the concept of Embodied Energy.
Topics Covered
Material Selection for Green Building
LEED Certification
Resource Efficiency
Sustainable Neighborhoods
Resource Efficiency
Sustainable Neighborhoods
Suggested Activities
Activity 1 - Material Selection
Encourage students to discuss the criteria for selecting materials for green buildings. Explain the benefits of using green building materials with the help of a case study. You can use the STRI Research Station case study from the following link: BuildingGreen Case Studies - Project ID 263
Alternate Link by David Young: STRI Research Station
Now, ask students to discuss which material they are planning for their project. Provide suggestions based on their responses to help them improve their project.
Activity 2 - Sustainable Neighborhoods
Ask students to list down the factors that are important for developing a sustainable community. Explain the effect of materials on the sustainability and LEED credits related to materials and sustainable neighborhoods.
Tell them about the following indicators that need to be kept in mind while comparing sustainable communities or neighborhoods:
Does the community have any smart growth programs that are designed to “help manage growth and avoid and eliminate urban sprawl” and minimize impacts on physical environment?
Does the community have zoning plans that demonstrate goals for the city in a way that create environmentally sensitive areas and maintain them?
How involved in the environmental and social justice movement are programs within the community?
Are there pollution remediation programs in the city?
Is the transportation system of the city set up to encourage public transportation and not private, to reduce pollution?
Activity 3 - Water Efficiency
Explain the importance of water efficiency while designing a sustainable building, and describe how water quality and conservation affect the sustainability of a building. Elaborate the strategies used for water efficiency through a case study. You can use the following link for referring to a case study: BuildingGreen Case Studies - Project ID 592
Alternate Link by David Young: Lakeside Solar House
Alternate Link by David Young: Iowa Utilities Board Office of Consumer Advocate Office Building
Now, ask students to suggest alternatives for water efficiency in a case study. Discuss their responses and help them understand the entire concept.
Activity 4 - Homework Expectations
Discuss the students’ expectations and clarify any doubts they might have regarding the assessments in Module 4. Check with students whether they are facing any problems with developing their project. Ask them to share their project progress report. Analyze their progress and accordingly suggest that they speed up or continue as is for submitting the deliverables on time. Also remind them that they need to take Quiz 3 in this module and begin
work on Project Part 2. Help them revise(?) the Module 3 readings.

Substitute for Lauren Lacey on Friday - July 1, 2016 (Week 3)
Message to David Young from Lauren Lacey:
Message to All Students from Lauren Lacey:
I have several of you, who still
have not submitted your assignments. Please note, every day your
assignment is late, I will deduct 5 points.
I will be out this Friday, Mr. Young will sub the class. Please be sure to respect his time and be on time.
You are to move forward with your module lessons and readings.
We discussed Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ) last week. You
should be completing Lab 2.1 - IEQ and Resource Maps and moving on to Lab
2.2 - Building Environment Charrette.
You will be broken into groups of 4 for this lab. You are to work as a team and complete the task as assigned to individual group members. You will visit https://www.buildinggreen.com/blog/zero-energy-buildings-database to select
a building for this activity. Side note: you must launch the database to view the building library.
All instructions can be found in your
study guides. However, please note the website listed for building
selection has changed.
Also, please watch the following videos we were unable to watch last week.
